Health Insurance

The medical insurance we provide is comprehensive, but can be a little confusing because Aetna provides the insurance but HR Pro reimburses you for expenses applied to the deductible since we're on a high deductible plan.

So here's how this works:

  • We enroll you in a plan from Aetna called Aetna Open Access® Managed Choice® - HSA 30/2500/NJ10. Enrollment is done through Extensis, our PEO (Professional Employment Organization for Payroll) and your coverage is effective upon hire, so there's no wait time! This plan has great coverage but does have a high deductible. So Aetna actually only starts covering your medical bills after you've racked up a certain amount of medical expenses per year. See summary of benefits here Lock.

  • Once you are enrolled in Extensis (our PEO) you will have to register and create an online account with Aetna. You do this  here . Please note that there is a few days of wait time between when your information is uploaded from Extensis to Aetna. Once your enrollment is uploaded, you can then create your on line profile on the Aetna website.

  • We employ a company called HRPro to reimburse you for any money towards your deductible that you have to pay because Aetna didn't pay it. That includes any kind of deductible, copayment or prescription, but please note there are exceptions such as:
Balance billing, which is not a covered item on the HRA as it is considered non-covered by the medical plan. This is very standard practice on HRA plans.
Direct billing, If this happens, it would only be from an out of network provider. The patient would then have to send the claim into Aetna for them to process. Once that it done and the patient gets his/her EOB form Aetna they can send that into HRPro for them to reimburse. Of course only the portion of the claim that goes towards the deductible will be reimbursed by the HRA.

  • So please make sure to discuss this with your provider before services are provided.

  • HRPro gives you a Visa card called a Benny Card which you can use to pay for medical expenses that Aetna isn't covering. You can either use that Visa card, or just pay yourself with a check and get reimbursed by HRPro.

We know you probably still have some questions and that's great! A great place to ask questions is in our benefits slack channel- your coworkers who've experienced this process already are a huge resource. You can also ask Liz for help deciphering our coverage!

Note that if you choose the out-of-network option for health insurance, you will pay a small amount out of pocket- this page details the in-network coverage.

Who is Covered

All full time employees receive a comprehensive health insurance package for themselves, their spouse, and dependents. Spouse and dependents are fully covered only if they are not enrolled in another health insurance plan. So, for example, if your partner has insurance from their employer, we won't cover them, but if they don't, we will!
