Buddy

According to Wikipedia, the first known use of the phrase “buddy system” goes as far back as 1942 🤪"The buddy system is basically working together in pairs in a large group or alone.". The buddy system is used in the  United States Armed Forces , and referred to by various names in each branch as well as the  Boy Scouts of Americ a and the  Girl Scouts of the USA .

Ah.. great to know! And so now?

The buddy system at MadKudu is used in new kudu onboarding for assisting with the culture in an organization. The buddy helps in acclimatizing the new kudu to the culture and day to day aspects of working, in a shorter period of time. The buddy helps the new employee to become knowledgeable about practices and organizational culture in a shorter period 🙃

Topic : Congratulations ! You're the buddy of XX @ MadKudu !
So, you might be wondering:

#1 What's a buddy?

Someone (you, in this case) who is given the privilege of helping out a new kudu in their first weeks at MadKudu.
You've been through it. You survived. You know it can be tough (even in a kind company as MadKudu 😉). Let others benefit from your experience and navigate their first few challenges at MadKudu.
We also hope you'll become BFF after this!

#2 Why me?

Because you're smart, fun and aWwWesome!
No, seriously, give yourself a pat on the back.
Also, because it gives you an opportunity to mix with different teams. You know, the other people who also work here? 🤪

#3 What should I do?

  • First, write a crazy & cool private message to your new teammate 😎 tel him/her who you are, what you're doing here...and that you'll be available for anything he/she needs on his/her first weeks! You can also explain what is that you do here - and who some of the other people are and schedule a call with the new kudu before his/her first day. We attempt to match (as best as possible, anyway) time zones between the new kudu and their onboarding buddy.
  • Have lunch with your buddy on his/her first week and show him/her the neigboorhood 🍝
  • Post a pic of both of you in a the story slack channel 📸#buddycontest
  • Suggest helpful handbook Notion pages. Chances are that you've discovered some particularly helpful pages in the handbook during your time at MadKudu. Point them out to the new kudu, and help them get used to navigating Notion.
  • Remind them about the Show and tell. New kudus are typically asked to introduce themselves to the rest of the team during the next show and tell. Remind them and help them know what to expect, and explain the nic cage movie thing 😜
  • Introduce them to Slack. Slack may seem like it's ubiquitous, but that doesn't necessarily mean the new kudu will have had experience using it before. Since it's a central part of how we communicate at MadKudu, consider showing them around, and give them some pointers about how we use it and invite him/her in the relevant channels.
  • Check in regularly. You may very well be the first friend the new kudu makes on the team. Checking in with them regularly will help them feel welcome and supported. Reach out via Slack, and schedule at least one follow-up call/ meeting for the week after their start date.

Pretty simple right? 😉 Now, your turn 🚀

Use him/her as much as you need! 🤪
Be pro active! Ask him/her things about his/her work and get her/him to introduce you to the max of people at MadKudu.
  • You can have lunch with your buddy, ask him/her to show you his/her favorite place to eat in the neighborhood! 🍝
  • You can thank him/her on slack (#kuduchannel)
  • Or post a pic of both of you in the story slack channel 📸#buddycontest
